Amneal announced the launch of Phytonadione Tablets, an AB-rated generic version of Valeant’s Mephyton.
Mephyton is a vitamin K1 formulation indicated to treat secondary hypoprothrombinemia. It has the same type and degree of activity as naturally-occurring vitamin K which is necessary for the production of factor II, factor VII, factor IX, and factor X. In patients lacking vitamin K, it works to promote hepatic biosynthesis of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors.
Oral phytonadione is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract only if bile salts are present. Following absorption, phytonadione is initially concentrated in the liver, but the concentration declines rapidly. Phytonadione tablets generally exert their effect within 6 to 10 hours.
Amneal’s generic product is available in a 5mg strength tablet supplied in 100-count bottles.
